Jan Maitland - Reverse Painting and Gilding On Glass

I was drawn toward Reverse Painting and Gilding on glass during a visit to master glass artist Marco Toso Borella, in Murano, Italy. “I was inspired by his work on gilded glass and application of Gustav Klimt motifs. I knew immediately that I had to explore this exciting medium."

As an artist and gilder, I work with glass as my primary support. I employ verre églomisé technique, which is the art of painting and gilding on the reverse side of the glass. Designs are engraved into the gold or silver leaf and painted on the back side of my glass bowls, table tops, and decor pieces. I employ the highest quality materials, including 23 Karat gold leaf, fine silver and copper leaf. All of my gilded and painted glass pieces are sealed rendering them as usable art.

I invite you to see my gilded glass painted bowls and gilded jewelry.
